This Wednesday, a large scale rescue operation off the coast of Turkiye concluded with the discovery of 18 dead bodies. The accident occurred during the early morning hours in the waters of the Aegean Sea, when a small pneumatic boat carrying dozens of people capsized due to excess weight and adverse maritime conditions in the area.
According to reports from local authorities, emergency teams managed to rescue 21 survivors. Those affected were immediately transferred to health centers to receive treatment for hypothermia and nervous breakdowns.
The Turkish Coast Guard deployed an operation that included maritime units and air support to search the area of the accident, which occurred in front of the tourist resort of Bodrum, in the southwest of the country.
The incident once again highlights the dangerousness of the route to the Greek island of Kos, located about 20 kilometers from Bodrum, which is frequented by citizens from Africa, Asia and the Middle East seeking refuge in Europe. According to the first reports, the boat would have ignored the arrest warnings before capsizing in its attempt to reach European Union territory.
