Azerbaijan applies to become a member of BRICS

This Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan formally requested to join the BRICS group.

It should be noted that in July of this year, Azerbaijan expressed its interest in being part of an international bloc during the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization held in Astana.

At that event, Azerbaijan and China signed a Joint Declaration on a Strategic Partnership, one of whose clauses declares Azerbaijan's intention to join the BRICS.

In this regard, China backed Azerbaijan's request and promised to support its entry into the group, Xinhua reports.

The BRICS currently includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, along with Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
