Last Monday, after the arrest by the Attorney General's Office of El Salvador of the head of the Anti-Corruption Department of the Cristosal Organization, Ruth López, the Center against Corruption and Impunity in Northern Central America (CCINOC) condemned the “arbitrary” arrest of the anti-corruption lawyer and human rights defender.

In a statement issued by the CCINOC, López's arrest is part of a “worrying systematic strategy of criminalization” against human rights defenders promoted by the Government of the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele.

He later pointed out that this policy “not only touched democratic institutions, but it also suppresses critical and dissenting voices, which are essential in any democratic society.”

According to information published by the Attorney General's Office on the social network X, she is accused of alleged “embezzlement” or misappropriation of State funds before starting her work in Cristosal.
