The People's Power Minister for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, described this Wednesday the alleged armed incident in the border area between Venezuela and Guyana as “smokescreens” to divert attention to the historical truth about Guiana Essequiba.

“It is already exhausting that the Government of Guyana resorts, over and over again, to this type of story and montage precisely when procedures related to the territorial dispute over Guiana Essequiba take place,” said the Venezuelan Foreign Minister through his Telegram channel.

He stressed that these allegations by the Guyanese government represent a fictitious story that seeks to tarnish legal procedures linked to the territorial dispute, while a Venezuelan delegation remains at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to expose the truth of its rights over this territory.

“They cannot divert attention from historical, legal and political truth: the only valid way to resolve this controversy is the Geneva Agreement of 1966, in force today and a diplomatic and peaceful mechanism to which both nations are committed,” Gil emphasized.

In this regard, he confirmed that any solution outside this framework lacks legitimacy and hinders the necessary bilateral dialogue, so he urged his counterpart to abandon the “recurring smokescreens”, which “will not hide their defeat in the face of the truth or their refusal to comply with the only mechanism agreed between the parties”.
