The Minister of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs,
Yván Gil, arrived this Thursday in Bogotá, Colombia, to participate in the Summit of
Amazonian Countries, where he will present, on behalf of President Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela's solid
record of achievements in protecting the Amazon.
“Over the years, the Bolivarian Government, in
close collaboration with our people, has confronted illegal mining and
deforestation in this vital region of biological diversity, always prioritizing
the lives of our indigenous peoples and sustainable development,” said the
Venezuelan Foreign Minister on his social networks.
Gil indicated that the meeting is aimed at building a
pact between the countries that make up the
Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (OTCA), to promote the joint preservation of this hydrographic space,
which covers an area of 7,413,827 km², and transports large volumes of water to the Atlantic.
He stressed that the agreement will align with the needs and
aspirations of indigenous peoples. “This unified position will be presented
at the World Conference on Climate Change, to be held next
November in Brazil.”
Finally, the diplomat thanked “the
Colombian authorities, especially President Gustavo Petro, for hosting this significant meeting.”
