Last Monday, the Colombian Public Prosecutor's Office requested nine years of house imprisonment for the father of paramilitarism, Álvaro Uribe, and a million-dollar fine for the crimes of procedural fraud in the first instance and bribery in criminal proceedings, although he was considered innocent of the crime of bribing witnesses.
According to detailed information from Telesur, Judge Sandra Liliana Heredia determined that there is no evidence to support the absence of crimes on the part of the former president.
Judge Heredia added that “for the conduct for which a conviction is handed down against Uribe Vélez (...) whose punishment starts at an amount greater than four years and less than eight, while the accused, regardless of the sentence that will be imposed, deserves house arrest as a substitute for imprisonment.”
In addition, when reading the ruling, Heredia emphasized that “the first bribery in criminal proceedings with regard to punishable material has been proven”.
The defense argued that the meaning of the ruling provides for the presumption of innocence, so it asked to keep the former president's freedom and requested a period of 24 hours to add elements to the conviction. However, the judge denied a new session and asked the defense to send items by mail.
