The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, confirmed this Tuesday that Bogotá will host the Regional Drug Summit to be held in the coming months, the Sputnik news agency reported.
“A conference on the topic of drugs, drug policies and therefore criminal gangs will be held in Bogotá, we have invited all the countries of America, mainly Latin American,” Petro announced at a press conference.
The El Espectador website states that the news was confirmed by President Petro, from Davos, Switzerland, where he is participating in the World Economic Forum, where he specified that the meeting, although there is no exact date yet, will most likely be in the coming months, with the participation of several leaders from the region.
“We have invited all countries to discuss these new realities, it's not the same as 20 or 40 years ago, criminal forms today are much more powerful than in the past (...) there may be a discussion between our countries on how to address the new security challenge we have,” he said.
The president of Colombia and his counterpart from Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, seek to promote an anti-drug policy that prioritizes people, the environment and human rights and leaves behind the so-called “war on drugs”.
