Colombian authorities count 13 deaths due to severe rains

A rescue team found two dead bodies in the Colombian city of Bello, bringing to 13 the number of deaths due to a flood caused by a downpour that affected the metropolitan area of Medellín, in northwestern Colombia, official sources cited by international media reported this Thursday.

“We have managed to rescue 23 people, unfortunately this tragedy has left us 13 people dead,” said the mayor of Bello (Antioquia), Lorena González.

The official added that rescue forces are continuing to search for 12 missing people and recalled that the tragedy occurred early Tuesday, when the inhabitants of the city were sleeping, after the heavy rains that occurred for more than 36 hours.

The downpour, which began Monday night, especially affected the Granizal and El Pinar sectors, where a stream of water and mud came down from the mountains and buried more than 50 homes. In the shelters set up by the Mayor's Office of Bello, 971 people are still staying, who have been supplied with hygiene kits, food kits and health brigades have also been developed among the victims.
