This Thursday, the Senate of the Republic of Colombia could vote and define a position before the crucial debate that could mark the political course of the last year of Gustavo Petro's administration: the approval or rejection of a popular consultation with 12 questions aimed at reviving a labor reform slowed down in the Legislature.

The Congress is practically the same in the face of the approval of the popular consultation, and they point out that of the 105 congressmen, 47 have stated that they would approve the motion, while another 46 have positioned themselves against it, leaving an uncertain margin of votes on which the final decision will depend.

This mechanism is promoted as a way out of “institutional paralysis”, it divides Congress and while the ruling party defends the evocation of the main democratic tool established by the Constitution of Colombia, right-wing parties argue that the convening would entail unnecessary spending and a risk to economic stability.

The call comes after in March 2025, the labor reform of the National Government that sought to expand rights such as the full minimum wage and restrict outsourcing was filed in the Seventh Committee of the Senate.

President Petro's response was the popular consultation, provided for in the Constitution for cases of “institutional blockade”.
