In Ecuador, indigenous community members and social organization activists are active and mobilized in a day of national strike against the latest decisions of the neoliberal government of Daniel Noboa.
During the afternoon of this Monday, they have reported a large contingent of police and military forces, with shields and weapons remaining on the roads leading to Latacunga.
The intimidating presence of uniformed personnel is perceived as a direct threat to the demonstrators who are mobilizing against the government of Daniel Noboa, in the context of the national strike.
The main objective of the measure of force is to demand the repeal of Executive Decree 126, issued by President Noboa, which eliminated the diesel subsidy and set its price at USD 2.80 until the end of December of the same year.
Social movements demand that the Executive rescind the decision to increase value added tax or VAT from 12 to 15%. They also demand a decent budget for health, education and security, at a time when fiscal adjustments translate into an unprecedented health and security crisis.
The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) reported that police officers violently entered houses in the Pijal community, in the González Suárez canton of Imbabura, and shot at the mobilized population.
During the events, “weapons of war such as assault rifles” were allegedly used, and they showed lethal ammunition. They denounce the action that put “the lives of children, women and the elderly at serious risk” in the community.
