The Permanent Committee on Indigenous Peoples of the National Assembly (AN) proposed to incorporate into the National Holidays Act, the dates that account for the struggles and resistance of the country's original population against the invading forces.

This was reported by the first vice-president of the commission, Deputy Francisco Martínez, who indicated that they also propose to include dates such as January 12, Afro-Venezuelan Women's Day.

The deputy, according to a press release from the parliament, explained the importance of also including February 21, International Mother Language Day, and indicated that it is a date that invites us to reflect on the importance of protecting and promoting linguistic diversity, multilingual education and knowledge of cultural traditions in all spheres of society.

He added that March 18, the Day of the Indigenous Boy and Girl, is a date that recognizes, through the new generations, the ancestral continuity, languages and cultural identity of the original peoples.

The parliamentarian commented that there are other dates that must be taken into account to be national holidays, such as August 09, International Day of Indigenous Peoples; September 5, International Day of Indigenous Women or September 20, Day of Indigenous Teachers.

He argued that, within the framework of the Reform of the Law on National Holidays, the contributions proposed by the parliamentary body must be studied and shared with the people.

“We should go to a general consultation to see if these dates can be included.”

Martínez explained that, during the commemoration of October 12, Day of Resistance and Decolonization of Indigenous Peoples and Communities, there is a schedule of activities, throughout the Venezuelan territory, in the more than 52 indigenous communities, where each of the deputies will be responsible for carrying out the activities proposed in this deployment.

Finally, the deputy stated that October 12 is a date that represents the struggle and resistance to foreign impositions. “That's why we must commemorate that day with our indigenous communities,” he said.
