As a smokescreen, the opposition considers the proposal of the president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, to convene a Constituent Assembly in the midst of growing citizen unrest over the decree that eliminated the diesel subsidy.
Noboa announced that he will seek to include in this year's popular consultation a question about the convening of the Constituent Assembly on the grounds that it is necessary to overcome what he called an “institutional kidnapping” by the Constitutional Court.
Under current legislation, the process requires prior control by the Court itself, a citizen's referendum, the election of constituents, the drafting of the new text and another approval referendum.
For its part, the Citizen Revolution (RC) party opposes in the same way against the ruler's suggestion to change the Magna Carta.
Likewise, the legislator of that block Mónica Palacios considered that it is “yet another distractor” and accused Noboa of blaming the Constitutional Court for his “ineffectiveness and ineptitude to govern the country”.
