The Council of the European Union (EU), which brings together member States, agreed to reintroduce a series of sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran for the country's nuclear proliferation activities, restrictive measures that had been suspended since the entry into force of the agreement reached in 2015, which limited the Persian nuclear program.
The community institution indicated in a statement that the decision was taken after the reactivation of United Nations (UN) sanctions, after the United Nations Security Council rejected a resolution submitted by the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China to give Tehran a six-month extension.
The sanctions (known as snapback) have been promoted by three countries in Europe (France, Germany and the United Kingdom, or group E3) that consider that Tehran has not fulfilled the commitments to limit its nuclear program made in the agreement reached in 2015, which limited the Iranian program and which was abandoned by the United States (US) in 2018, while Iran has repeated that E3 has not fulfilled its part of the deal.
The restrictive measures reintroduced this Monday include those adopted by the Security Council of the United Nations Organization since 2006 with successive resolutions of that body and automatically transposed into EU law, but also autonomous measures of the community club.
