Experts in heritage structures evaluate the Church of San Diego de Alcalá in Miranda

Authorities from the Miranda state government are maintaining an emergency technical deployment to design a rescue plan in the historic Church of San Diego de Alcalá, after the double earthquake of June 24.

After an inspection carried out by specialists from the Cultural Heritage Institute (IPC) and the local Diocese, the authorities revealed the seriousness of the seismic impact on the temple, a national monument that is almost four centuries old, suffered severe fractures.

The dome underwent an atypical spiral movement . The main tower is seriously damaged due to the strong traction of the earthquake. According to the technical report, the original buttresses of colonial architecture were the ones that prevented the total collapse of the building, according to the local press.

The mayor of the municipality, Farith Fraija, reported that technical tables have already been set up to begin architectural rehabilitation work.
