FANB engineers are trained to evaluate buildings affected by earthquakes

As part of the actions of the Presidential Commission for Infrastructure Evaluation, more than 30 professionals from the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) Engineers participated in a training day in the La Guaira Comprehensive Defense Operational Zone (ZODI), with the purpose of strengthening their capacities for the inspection and classification of damage to buildings affected by the seismic event that occurred last June 24.

The training, according to a press release from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MINCYT), was led by the Technical Director of the Institute of Engineering Foundation for Research and Technological Development (FIIIDT), Víctor Cano, who instructed the participants in the application of the evaluation methodology known as the “traffic light technique”, which allows the structural conditions of the works to be classified using a green, yellow and red labeling system.

“This is part of the army of engineers and volunteers who are joining the Commission to evaluate this great task that we have of more than 10,000 buildings nationwide, after the seismic event, and to give it the peace and quiet that our people need, to know if their building is in good condition to continue being inhabited,” said Cano.

For her part, Lieutenant Corvette Anangelis Brito, who belongs to the Infrastructure Directorate of the Bolivarian Navy Corps of Engineers, stressed that the training will make it possible to apply uniform technical criteria during inspections and improve communication with communities.

Brito stressed that in these spaces “they train with the correct criteria for the evaluation of structures and the form of labeling to evaluate the structural conditions in which buildings are located, the types of accidents that can be evidenced and how to talk to people so that they have an idea of how this classification is developing”.

He stressed that one of the fundamental objectives is to provide peace of mind to citizens during the inspection process.
