The heavy rains recorded in the province of Guizhou, in southwestern China, caused severe floods that so far left six people dead and the evacuation of more than 80,000 residents, according to reports from the Central Flood Control Office.
The overflow of the Duliu, Pingyong and Zhaihao rivers created a critical scenario.
Low-lying areas were quickly flooded and caused significant damage to basic infrastructure. Authorities report interruptions in land transport, telecommunications failures and severe material damage, as well as regrettable human losses. Rongjiang County was one of the most affected, with a flood of the Duliu River exceeding the alert level by 6.68 meters.
In response to the emergency, rescue teams comprised of firefighters, volunteers and medical personnel were deployed to clean up debris, drain water, disinfect affected areas and search for potential victims. At the same time, actions are being maintained to ensure the continuity of basic services and rehabilitation efforts are being accelerated in impacted communities.
The Chinese Government, through the National Development and Reform Commission, approved an allocation of 100 million yuan (about 13.95 million dollars) to deal with the contingency. The funds are intended for the recovery of key infrastructures, including hospitals, schools, hydraulic systems and communication routes, essential for the progressive return to normality.
Despite a slight drop in the water level in some sectors, meteorological authorities warned of the possibility of new extreme weather events. In this regard, the alert is maintained for continuous rains that could trigger secondary phenomena such as landslides, mudslides and landslides, keeping the emergency units deployed in the area under maximum vigilance.
