The Minister of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs of
the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Yván Gil, called on Thursday to reinforce
the fight for the State of Palestine to be admitted as a full member of the
United Nations (UN) and urged that efforts be made to
stop the genocide against this Arab people by the State of Israel.
During his opening speech at the 5th Ministerial Meeting
of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations, from
Uganda, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister warned about the global crisis generated by the
spread of fascist ideologies by “the United States, its allies of the European Union and other partners”, which have begun a period
of accelerated ethical and moral decline.
He pointed out that this is the product of a deterioration
of the economies of these countries and their capacities to respond to the population, which is why they are
driving “a destruction of trust, leadership and values, this
situation has profoundly eroded the multilateral system and the entire United Nations
system.”
“These actors propose a new order based on rules that
are unknown to the vast majority of countries, rules that work in an accommodative
manner based on corporate interests and at the service of the financial and industrial military
apparatus,” the diplomat denounced in his
speech in Kampala, where he is part of the Venezuelan delegation participating in the
XIX Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Movement of
Non-Aligned Countries (MNOAL) and the Third Summit of the South of Heads of State and Government of the
G77 and China.
He stressed that in order to overcome these growing tendencies
towards unilateralism and supremacy, it is necessary to “guarantee respect and full
adherence to the principles enshrined in the Founding Charter of the
United Nations and to prevent this organization from being definitively destroyed, devoured
by the indolence that leads it to levels of ineffectiveness hitherto unknown”.
In this regard, Minister Gil stressed that Venezuela
“is resolutely committed to strengthening this important Group of
Friends”, so he urged member countries to “identify
concrete actions that, as a matter of urgency, we can adopt and promote together to
support the just struggle of the noble Palestinian people.”
“We insist that the priority must continue to be to achieve a ceasefire and the genocide that is still ongoing today”, but, “in the absence of this, we are obliged, in parallel, to work on other equally urgent actions,” he emphasized, proposing the adoption of a mechanism that provides international protection to the Palestinian people, as well as the support of efforts for accountability, “which is essential to put an end to the prevailing cycle of impunity, all the more so considering that it will be impossible to achieve sustainable peace without a necessary process of justice and reparation”.
Finally, he reiterated Venezuela's determination to
work hand in hand with the Palestinian delegation, with the objective of “promoting
the creation of a credible political horizon that, without further delay, will put an end to
the Israeli occupation and restore to the brotherly Palestinian people their
inalienable rights, including to self-determination and return, in their free and independent State of
Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and on the borders prior to 1967.”
