The Foreign Minister of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Yván Gil, held a meeting this Friday with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Barbados, Kerrie Symmonds, focused on addressing the opportunity to expand cooperation in different areas.
From New York, where the 49th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations is taking place, Caribbean diplomats also reaffirmed the strong friendship between their countries.
Both States, with diplomatic relations established 55 years ago, increased cooperation after Prime Minister Mia Mottley's visit to Caracas in July 2023, leading a delegation, and in a meeting with President Nicolás Maduro, at the Miraflores Palace, the agreements on Air Services and on Agrifood Sovereignty were signed.
The parties also signed a Joint Declaration that establishes a formal commitment to continue working together in various areas of cooperation, reaffirming the bonds of solidarity, brotherhood and cooperation for the greater benefit of both peoples.
Previous agreements include the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the National Experimental University of the Arts (Unearte) and the University of the West Indies (UWI) of Barbados.
On October 17, 2023, the island nation served as the venue for the signing of two provisional agreements between the Bolivarian Government and the opposition represented in the Unitary Platform, aimed at “the promotion of political rights and electoral guarantees for all” and “the protection of the vital interests of the Nation”.
Also in October of last year, the Venezuelan Head of State received the Credential Letters of the new designated ambassador of the Caribbean island, Aquinas Clarke.
