The Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) of Bolivia sentenced former president Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada to more than six years in prison for corruption in oil contracts, in which he signed a total of 107 of those referred to, without authorization from the Bolivian Congress. In this regard, a judicial process was carried out that lasted approximately 20 years.
The Office of the Attorney General of the State, in a statement, said “after almost 20 years after the filing of the complaint, within the liability trial called petrocontracts, the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), formed in its Plenary Chamber, issued a Conviction Judgment imposing the deprivation of liberty to be served in the San Pedro de Chonchocoro Penitentiary Center, in the city of La Paz, for six years and three months.”
The former president was accused of signing 107 oil contracts, actions that triggered “the Gas War” in 2003, a conflict in which 67 people died and left more than 400 injured during the protests, which were suppressed by the Bolivian Armed Forces.
In addition, the Bolivian justice system imposed a five-year prison sentence on Jorge Joaquín Berindoague Alcocer, Carlos Alberto Contreras del Solar and Carlos Alberto López Quiroga, who were tried for breach of duty and anti-economic behavior.
