Former Colombian President Ernesto Samper welcomed the initiative of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to convene the foreign ministers of the regional bloc to evaluate the threats of the United States (USA) against Venezuela.
“Hopefully foreign ministers remember that, since the Treaty of Tlatelolco, Latin America has been considered a zone of peace in the world, free of nuclear weapons and foreign military bases and presence,” Samper wrote in his X account.
In this context, he pointed out that this meeting “must be followed by that of the region's defense ministers, to define a joint position in the face of this deployment, which must be considered another act of unfriendly bullying by Mr. Trump against Latin America.”
The Colombian government, led by Gustavo Petro, currently holds the pro tempore presidency of CELAC and urgently convened a virtual meeting of foreign ministers for Monday to analyze the regional situation following the recent deployment of U.S. warships in the Caribbean.
