The former president of Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, said that the amnesty laws represent the beginning of a new era, a refoundation of coexistence and an act of hope for the nation.
The statement was made at the end of the meeting with the Amnesty Law Monitoring Commission and the president of the National Assembly (AN), Deputy Jorge Rodríguez, held in the Hall of Shields of the Federal Legislative Palace, where he highlighted the strategic value of this legal instrument for national stability.
“There is future amnesty, political amnesty, high politics, forgiveness, what founded democracy. There is reconciliation in amnesty, that we feel that we live in a common, shared country, a destiny for all,” he said.
Rodríguez Zapatero stated that the Amnesty Law represents an unequivocal will to move towards democracy and stated that this instrument will serve as an essential reference for all subsequent laws in the country.
In this regard, he congratulated the President in charge of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez, for the initiative she described as “unilateral, decisive and courageous” in submitting a proposal of this nature to the AN.
He pointed out that the Special Commission for Monitoring the Amnesty Law constitutes a historic body for the supervision of agreements. He also assured that in the current scenario there is no space for hate or resentment.
“Today's Venezuela requires reconciliation, trust and coexistence and, why not, hugs,” said the former president.
He considered that the current political landscape constitutes the best opportunity to consolidate stability and understanding in the nation.
He also stated that there is an unequivocal will of the vast majority of all Venezuelan political sectors to move firmly towards peace.
