Francisco Garcés: It is very important to certify any type of information before generating alerts

The expert in seismic resistant engineering, Francisco Garcés, recommended that citizens consult information through accurate, proven and scientific sources, regarding the seismic events of last Wednesday, June 24.

In his participation in the special program of Venezolana de Televisión, he insisted on the importance of certifying any type of information before generating alerts, while stressing the importance of trusting those who are in charge of official information.

“Before, on the networks, some journalists liked us, there are many serious journalists, but there are others who take advantage of their profession, unfortunately, there are a number of people on the networks who think they are engineers,” he warned.

Garcés stressed that there is science, knowledge and experience, so to obtain real and valid information, he recommended “let's go to accurate, proven and scientific sources, for example, if I want information about earthquakes, I look for the page of (Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research) FUNVISIS or international institutes”.

He stressed the importance of trusting information from people who “have no experience, maybe they act with good will, but they are doing harm”.

In this context, he also commented that seismic resistant engineering aims to work so that structures are able to competently withstand earthquakes.
