FUNVISIS rules out tsunami alert in La Guaira due to false rumors

In order to deny rumors spread with the ill intention of generating panic in the population of the state of La Guaira, the Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research (FUNVISIS), an official body for seismological research in Venezuela, issued a statement, informing for the peace of mind of the Venezuelan people that there is no tsunami warning.
On his account on the social network Instagram, he explained that the secondary earthquakes recorded after the main event of June 24, 2026 are in the range of magnitude lower than 7.0 Mw, so they have no capacity to generate a tsunami.
For a tsunami to occur, the seabed must move vertically. In the case of La Guaira and the Central Coast, the fault system is transcurrent, meaning that the movement is horizontal, with no significant uplift or subsidence of the seabed.
For this reason, these faults do not generate catastrophic local tsunamis. The spread of such rumors only hinders search and rescue operations, body recovery, debris removal and care for the Guaireña community.
The only entity authorized to issue a tsunami alert in Venezuela is FUNVISIS. It is recommended to remain calm, attend only to official information and avoid spreading false rumors, which delay the work and actions undertaken for the recovery of La Guaira.
