The Government of Colombia reported that the bilateral ceasefire with the Central General Staff (EMC), dissidents of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia and People's Army (FARC-EP), established on October 16, was extended for another six months, according to the Telesur website.
He explains that the extension of the bilateral and temporary ceasefire of a national nature will take effect from 00:00 (local time) this Tuesday, 16, until 24:00 (local time) on July 15.
According to the Office of the High Commissioner for Peace, Defense Minister Iván Velásquez Gómez signed Decree 0016 last Sunday, which orders “the suspension of offensive military operations and police operations.”
At the same time, acts contrary to the provisions of the Protocol of Rules and Commitments, which was agreed between the parties at the peace dialogue table, will be suspended.
According to the official document, the extension of the ceasefire seeks to “strengthen and maintain rules and commitment to the protection of the civilian population and, to that extent, to avoid affecting them and the assets protected by International Humanitarian Law”.
It is also established that the parties may establish new objectives in order to strengthen the peace process, territorial transformations, the replacement of illegal economies, and environmental and humanitarian protection.
In this regard, the special representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) in Colombia, Carlos Ruiz Massieu, stressed that this year may be “decisive” for national peace after the link between the implementation of the agreement and dialogue initiatives with other armed actors became evident in 2023.
The third cycle of dialogue between the parties is currently taking place in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, and will run until January 20.
