The Aragueño sprinter Javier Gómez became the first Venezuelan to drop below 45 seconds in the 400 meters, registering a superb mark of 44.66 in the final of the race held during the first day of the National Senior Championship, at the Brígido Iriarte Stadium in Caracas.

Gómez set a new national record for 400 meters flat, exceeding the 45.06 set by Kelvis Padrino in August last year.

The athlete is participating in the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games next August.

For her part, the Sucrense company Orangys Jiménez became the great figure of short speed when she updated the national hectometer mark to 11.19 to win the gold medal over the capital Glanyernis Guerra (11.35), the third place went to the Colombian Marleth Ospino with 11.40.

Meanwhile, Jeferson Chacón from Merida improved the national record in the half marathon of athletic walking on the track (21,097 km), stopping the clock at 32 minutes and 39 seconds, which represents the new Venezuelan top, which made him worthy of the silver medal.

The podium in the national joust was led by coffee grower Ezequiel Arrubla with 1:29.02 and Pedro Márquez from Merida came in third with 1:41.03.

The list of Venezuelan qualifiers for the Oregon 2026 Under-20 Athletics World Championship is expanded with two new names.

The first to specify the mark was the Neo-Spartan Sahara Boada, who managed to record a time of 14.08 in the 100-meter hurdles, only .02 below the 14.10 required by World Athletics (WA), which includes her as part of the quota that will travel to the mecca of American athletics for the world championship.

In the same way, the youth midfielders demonstrated that they are ready to measure themselves on big stages by joining twice in the 1,500 meters with Marlon Patiño from Sucrense, who registered a personal record of 3:46.98, and Julio Chirinos from Monagua, who already had a universal coupon in the 800 meters, and who now has a ticket in this second test when he clocks 3:47.30 against the minimum established by the WA of 3:47.50.

The National Senior Athletics Championship will have the last two rounds this Friday, May 22, with 23 new track and field finals that will define its new champions.
