This Thursday, the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, celebrated the signing of a historic agreement between Venezuela and Colombia to establish “immediately” the first Binational Zone of Peace between the two nations.
“There was an event that I describe as historic at the headquarters of the vice-presidency. A Binational Agreement has been signed with the official representatives of the government of Colombia and Venezuela to immediately establish the first binational zone of peace, economic, cultural and social development,” said the Head of State.
He stressed that in this process of initiating the project on the Venezuelan side, this area will include the state of Zulia and Táchira and on the part of Colombia the territories bordering those Venezuelan states.
Maduro stressed that it is also planned to unite the military and police forces of both countries to combat drug trafficking. He thanked his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, for consolidating the agreement.
Among the fundamental purposes of this area, he emphasized the substantial increase in binational trade, referring to the 1.2 billion dollars reached last year, with projections of even greater growth.
It also seeks to promote binational and international investments, mentioning the interest of nations such as China, India, Russia and Türkiye.
