Lula calls for preventing the return of fascism in Brazil

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, stated during an interview with several media outlets that there is a moral, ethical and Christian commitment to prevent the return of authoritarian forces to power in his country.

“There is a moral, ethical, I would say even Christian commitment, not to allow a fascist to govern this country again,” Lula said, justifying his permanence in political life. The head of state insisted that a possible application does not respond to a personal will.

The president pointed out that external factors and the conjunctural moment are what decide a candidacy. “It's not that I want a fourth term. You don't always want the first, you want the second, you want the third,” he said.

The president, in an interview with Telesur, linked this historic responsibility to the possibility of a new presidential candidacy for the October elections.

The president focused his reflection on the defense of democracy: Lula believes that his political project faces an inescapable responsibility in the face of the current national scene.
