The mayor of Caracas, Carmen Meléndez, reported that 25 people have been rescued among the three collapsed buildings in the San Bernardino parish, after the double earthquake recorded yesterday in several states of the country.
Meléndez said that rescue teams worked all night, with specialized equipment and direct coordination with Public Security agencies, to search for trapped people. He indicated that among those rescued there were survivors transferred to health centers and also deceased people recovered from the rubble.
He explained that, in addition to San Bernardino, there are operations in El Paraíso, where a building collapsed, and in Pinto Salinas, specifically in block 5, where a section of the structure collapsed. He added that parish liaisons maintain permanent communication to report incidents and guide deployment.
The mayor reported that many families spent the night in secure spaces set up in Caracas. In San Bernardino, the Guayana Esequiba Cultural Sports Complex received residents who evacuated their buildings. Other guard points were activated in sports areas without nearby structures, following the instructions of the president in charge Delcy Rodríguez, who is in constant communication with local authorities.
Meléndez recalled that, as part of the preventive measures, there are no school activities this Thursday and the Caracas Metro remains closed, while mobility is carried out by surface. He highlighted the work of Caracas firefighters and security officials, whom he recognized for their work in rescuing trapped people and caring for affected families.
He indicated that Caracas also provides support to the state of La Guaira, with ambulances and patrols, due to the damage registered in that entity. He reiterated the call to the population to remain calm and report incidents through official channels, while efforts continue to search for the collapsed structures.
