Mexico and Chile referred the situation of the State of Palestine to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) for him to investigate the crimes committed, according to a statement from the Mexican Secretariat for Foreign Affairs.

“Today, Mexico and Chile referred the situation of the State of Palestine to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, in order to investigate the probable commission of crimes within their competence,” they specified in their account on the social network X.

These American countries are based on articles 13 and 14 of the Court's statute and are due to growing concern about the escalation of violence against the civilian population.

They add that there is a “total collapse of Palestine's national justice infrastructure” and “it would not be able to investigate or prosecute possible crimes committed on its territory or by its nationals”.}

They also highlighted the importance of being investigated independently of the prosecutor, following United Nations reports.

The statement emphasizes that the Government of Mexico is aware of and is following up on the case presented by South Africa to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
