The Government of the extreme right wing Javier Milei approved the operations to evict indigenous communities through a decree published in the Official Gazette that eliminates the legal protection of the original peoples of Argentina.
This measure failed to evaluate the claims of indigenous families for their ancestral rights to the lands they have inhabited for generations and now pass into the hands of landowners allied to the southern ruler.
Decree 1083 establishes that the emergency in the matter of possession and ownership of land has ended: “The emergency in the matter of possession and ownership of the lands traditionally occupied by the country's original indigenous communities, and the suspension provided for in Article 2, must be declared over,” the document says.
Milei justified the decision on the grounds that the law seriously affected the right of landowners to their land and compromised the ability of provinces to manage their natural resources.
The immediate termination of the Emergency Decree and the Resolution of the Government of Milei to authorize the evictions of indigenous communities are rejected due to the serious consequences, both social and environmental, that they will entail. While others assert that the indiscriminate exploitation of these lands can lead to the destruction of vital ecosystems protected by indigenous communities that are guardians of biodiversity in their ancestral lands.
