Maniel Adorni, Javier Milei's chief of cabinet ministers, is being formally investigated by the Argentine federal justice system for the alleged crime of illicit enrichment, a measure promoted by prosecutor Gerardo Pollicita following a complaint by the deputy Marcela Pagano, who seeks to clarify serious inconsistencies detected in the official's financial affidavits.
The recent scandal generated by the inclusion of his wife, Bettina Angeletti, in the official entourage that accompanied Milei on her last visit to the United States (USA), in early March, made the case gain public relevance.
The prosecution asked the Anti-Corruption Office for Adorni's property records from recent years and requested detailed information about properties in the name of his spouse that are not included in his official reports.
A residence in an exclusive private neighborhood in the province of Buenos Aires and an apartment in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Caballito are among the assets under review. In addition, the authorities are investigating who bears the maintenance costs of these buildings and the origin of the funds used for a private trip to Uruguay made in February, allegedly funded by a third party.
Faced with the questions, Adorni assured that his heritage was built during more than 25 years of work in the private sector before joining public management.
In addition, he justified the absence of certain assets in his reports by claiming that the deadlines for affidavits have not yet expired and avoided delving into details so as not to interfere with the criminal case.
