In the year 2024, in Venezuela, violence and terrorism became the central focus of the agenda of the country 's extreme right-wing groups. Since then, the Bolivarian Government faced a series of challenges related to the dismantling of Structured Organized Crime Groups (GEDO), attacks on electrical infrastructure and explosives.
The Sectorial Vice President for Policy,
Citizen Security and Peace, and Minister for Internal Relations, Justice and Peace,
Diosdado Cabello Rondón, since his appointment on August 27, 2024, has focused on
dismantling subversive plans and denouncing attacks on vital infrastructure orchestrated by the United States Government.
After the execution of the Perfect Popular, Military and
Police Fusion, instructed by President Nicolás Maduro, the various citizen
security bodies made significant progress in the national territory in
terms of the dismantling of GEDO.
Over the months, multiple
operations were carried out that resulted in the capture of leaders of these organizations and the
seizure of large quantities of weapons and explosives.
In addition, authorities reported that more than 30 groups
were dismantled, which was presented as a significant success in the
fight against terrorism.
In addition, during the first year of Captain Diosdado Cabello Rondón's administration, there have been numerous attacks against the National Electric System (SEN). These acts, which affected various regions of the country and caused massive service interruptions, were attributed to an “electrical war”.
Operation Lightning of Catatumbo: a disjointed plan
Operation Lightning of Catatumbo was presented as
a strong response to the growing violence generated by
guerrilla activity and drug trafficking on the Colombian-Venezuelan border. The
main objective of this operation was to dismantle armed groups operating in
the area for the purpose of carrying out illegal drug trafficking.
In the first months of his administration, the Minister of Internal
Relations, Justice and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, announced the
dismantling of gangs dedicated to the illicit trafficking of psychotropic drugs
through the so-called Operation Lightning of Catatumbo, actions that
were pursuing an assassination attempt by the GEDO against the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, and Minister Cabello himself.
It should be noted that the development of these
terrorist actions is driven by the opposition and the United States Government, as
well as by the former presidents of Colombia, Álvaro Uribe, Juan Manuel Santos,
Iván Duque and Andrés Pastrana, who intended to generate a coup d'etat and plunge the country into chaos.
These terrorist actions managed to be dismantled,
thanks to the intelligence efforts of the various
citizen security bodies and the Bolivarian National Armed Force (FANB), which allowed the
capture of their leaders and, therefore, the seizure of weapons, drugs, among others.
Terrorism as a weapon of destabilization
Recently, there have also been several attempts at
explosive attacks at strategic points in the country. These acts, which
included the attempt to detonate artifacts in public spaces such as
hospitals, squares, institutional headquarters, underground transportation systems, service
stations and oil institutions, were presented as
part of an urban terrorism strategy designed to sow panic among Venezuelans.
The Bolivarian Government's response to these events has
been to intensify surveillance and security, as well as to initiate
investigations that have culminated in the arrest of several suspects.
Following these events, the Government of Venezuela has denounced
the “extreme right” and sectors of the national and
international opposition for financing and orchestrating such terrorist acts.
Diosdado Cabello's term as minister has been
marked by a constant fight against terrorism that sought to plunge the Venezuelan
State into a social and economic crisis.
