At the World Congress in Defense of Mother Earth, held this Thursday, at the Municipal Theater of Caracas, the Minister of Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez, offered scientific data on the current state of marine temperatures and their effects on national climate variability.

The head of the scientific portfolio reported that the temperature threshold of 1.5 degrees has been exceeded in the Caribbean Sea basin since February, a trend that is also observed in the Pacific. This oceanic thermal increase points to a possible doubling of cyclones during this period.

The Minister explained that this “accelerated and abrupt” climate variability generates imbalances in the natural cycles of rain and drought, which has direct consequences in the Venezuelan countryside:

“Of course, we also see an impact on agricultural production, floodplains, and our plains in the state of Barinas, Portuguesa, exactly in the period in which we planted corn, and all this affects crop yields, now excess water stress,” Jiménez stressed.
