The representative of Venezuela before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the Guiana Essequiba case, Samuel Moncada, assured that Guyana is the beneficiary of a colonialist dispossession formalized through fraudulent arbitration.

“Guyana presents itself as the legitimate heir to the Dutch and British territory, but the reality is that it is the beneficiary of a colonialist dispossession formalized through fraudulent arbitration. The purpose of the Geneva agreement is to correct this centuries-old injustice,” he said during his speech at the hearing convened unilaterally by Guyana to appear before the ICJ in The Hague.

He also reiterated that “Venezuela has consistently maintained that issues relating to its territorial integrity cannot be submitted to dispute resolution mechanisms,” while reiterating that the nation “has never consented to submit this dispute to the jurisdiction of any court or arbitral tribunal.”

He rejected the accusations “presented by Guyana of an alleged threat to its territorial integrity or to its sovereign territory; this constitutes a flagrant misinterpretation, and a deliberately misleading presentation of facts and law”.

Finally, he reiterated that “we follow The Hague in the same spirit in which we negotiated and celebrated the Geneva agreement, the only instrument that will allow us to reach the mutually satisfactory solution that all of us”.
