On a historic day, more than 1 million farm workers in 15,563 rural communities across the country participated in the election of spokeswomen and spokespersons for the Peasant Councils, to promote the strengthening of food sovereignty.

The Minister of Popular Power for Productive Agriculture and Lands, Julio León Heredia, explained that 46,689 main spokespersons and 46,689 alternate spokespersons were elected during the meetings.

He also noted that the elected spokespersons will assume responsibilities in three strategic commissions: Organization and Training, Productive Economy and Territorial Defense and National Sovereignty on the way to the Popular Peasant Consultation on September 18.

“This was a constituent process of a historic nature, with the same peasantry that at the time accompanied Bolivar, Zamora and Chávez,” he said.

The day marked the birth of the National Peasant Union Ezequiel Zamora, an organic force promoted by the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, as part of the new model of national agricultural development, oriented to production, territorial organization and the active defense of the Venezuelan countryside.
