National government strengthens comprehensive treatment of hydrographic basins after the double earthquake

The national Government is making progress in implementing a comprehensive plan for the treatment of hydrographic basins affected by the two earthquakes of last June 24, through preventive actions aimed at reducing risks and protecting the population.

The sectoral vice-president of Planning, Ricardo Menéndez, during a coordination meeting between the ministries of Popular Power for Planning, Ecosocialism and Water Care.

Menéndez explained that the tasks respond to the guidelines issued from the Presidential Command Post installed to deal with the contingency, where permanent coordination is maintained between the institutions involved.

“We are working on the treatment of each of the hydrographic basins, both in the lower part, in the middle part, and in the upper part. As a result of the two earthquakes, there were effects, specifically in the middle and in the upper part,” he said.

Menéndez indicated that the effects have been evaluated through helicopter overflights, drone flights, high-precision cartographic surveys and fieldwork, which has made it possible to identify areas that require immediate intervention.

He specified that these evaluations serve as the basis for developing preventive actions in each of the basins, with the purpose of minimizing risks in the face of future natural events.

As part of the care plan, Menéndez reported that maintenance work is being carried out on sediment traps, removal of large materials, adaptation of decelerators and intervention work in watercourses.

During the meeting, the Minister of Popular Power for Ecosocialism, Nelson Rodríguez, reported that the teams are constantly monitoring the basins belonging to the Waraira Repano National Park, due to the displacement of plant mass following the earthquakes.

He added that this work is carried out in coordination with the communal councils and communes established in the middle and lower areas of the ravines, in order to strengthen preventive surveillance and ensure a timely response to any eventuality.

For his part, the Minister of People's Power for Water Care, Carlos Mast, reported that four stream systems were prioritized that supply drinking water to different communities, where cleaning and desalination of desilters are already being carried out.

He indicated that cartographic information will make it possible to optimize water collection and purification processes, while helping to keep basins in better condition, reduce future risks and reduce the accumulation of sediments that affect water quality.
