The National Assembly (AN) approved an agreement in support of the recent inclusion of the Venezuelan joropo in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), recognition granted on December 9.
The president of the Permanent Committee on Culture and Recreation, Deputy Cristóbal Jiménez, presented the draft agreement and stressed that the joropo constitutes an essential manifestation of popular sentiment, comprised of music, poetry and dance. He recalled that the file submitted to UNESCO includes six variants of this traditional expression and is part of a work promoted for years by the Parliament.
The agreement highlights the joropo as the most representative musical and dance manifestation of Venezuelan identity, characterized by its diversity of rhythms, styles, instruments, clothing and poetic creation transmitted from generation to generation.
The Parliament decided to celebrate the declaration granted by UNESCO throughout the country and to recognize the work of farmers, musicians, dancers, researchers, communities and cultural promoters who have preserved and disseminated this tradition over time. In addition, he reiterated his commitment to accompany national policies aimed at the protection, promotion and teaching of the joropo in the national territory.
Finally, the publication of the agreement was ordered in the Official Gazette of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela for wide dissemination.
