The Nobel Peace Prize winner, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, condemned, through a statement, the military deployment of the United States in the Caribbean and the campaign being waged against Venezuela by President Nicolás Maduro.

In the text signed by the Argentinian professor and human rights activist, the Trump Administration uses lies to justify military aggression against our country, while stressing that this strategy is not new.

Below is the full text:

Trump and the Trap of Lies

Lies are the mother of all violence, and Donald Trump uses it against people who oppose the politics and interests of the United States. It threatens military intervention in Venezuela to overthrow and arrest Nicolás Maduro. This position shows that the United States still views Latin America as its “backyard”, a mentality that is manifested in the economic blockade maintained for more than sixty years against Cuba and in the occupation of the military base in Guantánamo.

This is not a new pattern of behavior, George W. Bush used lies for Trak, falsely accusing Saddam Hussein of possessing “weapons of mass destruction. The real objective was to overthrow an old ally in the war against Iran. These lies caused the death of children and civilians at the hands of U.S. troops and their allies, facilitated the looting of the Iraqi people's cultural and natural resources, and secured control of oil. The weapons that Bush claimed existed were never found. Similarly, the military invasion of Panama, which killed 1,500 Panamanians in the popular neighborhood of Los Chorrillos, relied on falsehoods to capture General Manuel Noriega, another former ally now accused of drug trafficking. All these interventions and impunity form a historic legacy.

Now, Trump is resorting to the same worn-out methods and arguments, labeling Maduro a “narco-terrorist.” It has deployed thousands of soldiers, warships and other resources to the Caribbean, openly threatening military intervention. Faced with this escalation of war, the Venezuelan people are preparing for a possible armed conflict, while observing the complacent silence of the UN, the OAS and numerous countries.

Trump's policy actively undermines international law and violates UN human rights protocols, pacts and declarations. It uses its veto power in the Security Council to block sanctions against Israel, accused of genocide against the Palestinian people, and even pressures the International Criminal Court to withdraw the accusations of genocide against Benjamin Netanyahu. The joint bombings by the United States and Israel against targets in Iran place the world in a state of profound insecurity, completely ignoring the sovereignty of peoples and the international legal framework.

Meanwhile, in the Gaza Strip, Palestinians are victims of continued “ethnic cleansing” by Israel, which kills them through hunger and armed violence. Europe, for its part, is complacently silent and continues to support the Israeli government.
