The worker Samuel Sánchez Álvarez is assassinated by Digepol
Romulo Betancourt announced: “The Scammers Will Be Ruthlessly Swept Away”
- Samuel Sánchez Álvarez, a worker of Spanish origin, was shot to the temple in front of the Boyacá Theater, during demonstrations that took place in Caracas in protest against the mass dismissal of workers ordered by the national executive.
- In a plenary assembly, construction workers gathered that day at the Casa Sindical del Paraíso to protest the sudden suspension, by the government, of the emergency plan that left thousands of parents unable to cover the needs of their homes.
- From the Trade Union House, the protests flooded San Martín Avenue, Páez del Paraíso Avenue, El Silencio Avenue, El Calvario Avenue, El Conde Avenue and San Agustín Avenue, to request the resumption of the works of the previous government that were paralyzed, some of which were frozen in time forever (El Helicoide, for example).
- State bodies repressed thousands of construction workers and public administration workers who were the subject of the mass dismissal decreed by Romulo Betancourt.
- More than 150 workers and students were arrested and subjected to forced labor in the Mobile Colonies of El Dorado, in Bolivar.
- In the immediate vicinity of Digepol's headquarters, Carlos Bravo (17 years old), Simón Mata (16 years old), Jesús Armando Urbáez (23 years old), Efraín Pérez (17 years old), Hrubry Vojtec (46 years old), Humberto Sosa Sarmiento (18 years old), José Isabel Navas (27 years old), Ricardo Eleazar Medina (36 years old), Pedro Manuel Marrero (18 years old), Luis Alberto Ríos (18 years old) and Francisco Javier Zambrano (17 years old). Three of them died a few days later.
- 150 of the demonstrators, the next day, were sent from La Carlota to the Mobile Colonies. This is how Betancourt inaugurated the infamous “Hampoduct”.
- All procedural guarantees of the right to defense, presumption of innocence, right to family visits, right to be tried impartially by a natural judge and the appointment of a lawyer to hear the cases of the detainees were violated.
- The yellow press carried out negative campaigns against the demonstrators.
- All this in an attempt to justify the death of Samuel Sánchez Álvarez, the seriously injured who died a short time later and the existence of concentration camps.
