A Palestinian family was deported from Argentina after being held at Ezeiza International Airport for more than 24 hours, despite presenting the documentation required for admission, according to a court complaint filed by those affected.
The family originally from Beit Sahour, West Bank, stated that during their stay they had no access to food, water, a translator or defense. In the complaint, they point out that the purpose of the trip was to establish business contacts in the area of religious tourism, an activity to which they are engaged in in the Holy Land. They were invited by an Argentinian businessman from the same sector.
The family's lawyer, Uriel Biondi, informed EFE that the five people - a couple and three adult children - arrived on the night of June 16 with visas issued by the Argentine embassy in Tel Aviv, medical insurance, accommodation reservations, return tickets and letter of invitation. According to the complaint, their passports were withheld and were denied minimum conditions such as rest, food, communication and legal assistance.
According to what was published by the SwissInfo web portal, they indicated that they were taken to a restricted area, where they provided the required documentation. Later, they signed a form in Spanish, whose content they did not understand, since no translation was provided. They stated that they were informed that the document did not imply a refusal to enter.
On June 17, Biondi filed a writ of habeas corpus before the Federal Court No. 1 of Lomas de Zamora, but the measure was issued when they had already been returned to Istanbul, Türkiye, to continue on their way to the West Bank. The Ministry of the Interior confirmed the procedure, without issuing additional statements.
Since December 2023, the Argentine government has applied a more restrictive migratory scheme, formalized by decree in May. At the same time, it maintains close relations with the Israeli executive, headed by Benjamin Netanyahu, who is accused of carrying out an armed offensive in Gaza that has left more than 50,000 Palestinians dead.
