Members of the Palmeras de Chacao are getting ready for a new season of pruning the blessed palm on the occasion of the commemoration of Holy Week. Representatives of this cultural and spiritual manifestation, recognized as Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2019, met with authorities from the Ministry of Ecosocialism and the president of the National Park Institute (Inparks), Rosinés Chávez, who granted permission for the controlled pruning of the emblematic plant.
The secretary of the Palmeras de Chacao organization, Richard Delgado, proposed to Minec the execution of a joint project based on the rescue of the Chacaíto ravine to give a tourist corridor to Caracas, where a new park would operate for the capital. “We offer our help and our knowledge together with the park rangers, to carry out this non-profit project.”
From the ministerial office, not only was this proposal welcomed, but the Palmeras de Chacao were invited to be part of the promoters of the Chuquisaca Plan, which is carrying out this management.
The Chuquisaca Plan is a national reforestation program inspired by the conservation decree of El Libertador Simón Bolívar, whose central purpose is the planting of 10 million fruit, medicinal and ornamental trees, for which the palm trees become strategic allies to promote the campaign.
For her part, the president of Inparks, Rosinés Chávez, said that it is an honor for her and the institution she represents to help maintain support for the Palmeras of Chacao. “They have achieved a connection with the little palm trees, teaching them the tradition and the care of the palms. You are the greatest protectors of this tradition, but also of Waraira Repano,” he said.
Richard Delgad commented during the meeting that they currently have 2,640 sectors of the park planted with palms, and that they are aspiring to rehabilitate a nursery for palms and other species typical of the place, which is about a thousand meters high from Boyacá Avenue (Cota Mil).
Next Friday, March 27, the Palm Trees of Chacao will once again rise to the heights of the capital's main plant lung to fulfill the tradition of the lowering of the blessed palm, which will be taken advantage of next Palm Sunday. The event will be attended as guests by Minister Ñáñez and the president of Inparks, Rosinés Chávez.
