Last Sunday, March 22, the Palmeras of Chacao met to receive the traditional blessing before beginning their ascent to the mountain in search of the royal palm.

According to information from Venezolana de Televisión, this liturgical act, known as the sending mass, represents the spiritual beginning of Holy Week in the capital and reaffirms a commitment to faith that has lasted for more than two centuries.

The ceremony keeps alive a tradition that dates back to the late 18th century, when the young men of the estates of Chacao fulfilled a promise of faith in the midst of an epidemic of yellow fever.

Richard Delgado, secretary of the Palmeras Association of Chacao, explained that the ritual seeks to bless attire, families and faith, unifying criteria and energies before climbing the mountain.

The tour begins in the Sabas Nieves sector, where palm trees spend several nights in the Waraira Repano National Park, in an environment of respect for nature and brotherhood.

The most awaited moment is the descent, when the participants descend loaded with palm accompanied by traditional music and the fervor of the neighbors, so that the plants are blessed and distributed to the people of Caracas.
