A strong explosion of a tanker truck that occurred this Tuesday under the structure of the Bridge of the Americas, Panama has left an unfortunate result of one person dead and four injured.
The accident, whose causes are under investigation, has forced traffic authorities to decree the total and temporary closure of this vital artery, which connects Panama City with the district of Arraiján, causing an immediate impact on traffic flow to the western sector of the country.
Emergency teams and the Fire Department traveled to the scene of the incident to put out the flames and provide medical assistance to those affected. The four injured have been taken to nearby hospitals, while the area remains cordoned off to allow expert work and ensure the structural stability of the bridge after the shock wave.
The death of a person at the scene has been confirmed by local authorities, who are working to identify the victim.
Faced with the collapse of traffic, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) reacted immediately by setting up an exceptional logistics corridor between the Bruges highway and the Centennial Bridge.
This measure seeks to mitigate the impact of the closure and guarantee the transit of heavy and private vehicles into the interior of the country. Users are advised to avoid the area and use only alternate routes until it is determined that the passage through the Bridge of the Americas is safe.
Despite the magnitude of the emergency in the immediate vicinity of the highway, the Panama Canal administration clarified that the operations of the transoceanic highway have not been interrupted and continue to operate normally. The authorities urge the population to keep informed through official channels and warn that the cleaning and removal of debris under the bridge could extend over the next few hours.
