This Saturday, in Peru, a large number of demonstrators, called by organizations affiliated with Pension Fund Administrators (AFP), labor unions and student groups, were violently dispersed by the National Police in the vicinity of Congress when they protested in rejection of a regressive reform of the pension system.

The new legislation, promoted by right-wing groups in Congress, does not solve the structural problems of the pension system and only guarantees profits for the AFP, Telesur details in an appointment with the demonstrators.

The most critical point of the protest came when the demonstrators, overcoming the police cordon that confined them to a lane, tried to move towards the Legislative Palace.

The response was the massive deployment of members of the rapid intervention group, who threw tear gas to disperse the crowd and made arbitrary arrests.

The law represents a setback in workers' rights. Among its most criticized points are the extension of the age for early retirement from 50 to 55 and the prohibition of partial withdrawal of accumulated funds, a measure that particularly affects members under 40, who will no longer be able to access 95.5% of their savings upon retirement.

The government and business sectors argue that the rule seeks to “protect” members' funds after 2.3 million people exhausted their savings after seven partial withdrawals approved during and after the pandemic.
