Pope Leo XIV, during his first mass on Palm Sunday, called for the laying down of arms in the face of wars and called for peace in the world. “Lay down your weapons, remember that you are brothers!” , he said this in his homily, as part of the context of the beginning of Holy Week 2026.

In addition, he stressed that “Christ, King of Peace, continues to cry out from his cross: God is love! Have mercy!” The supreme pontiff recalled that Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey, a symbol of humility, and not as a military leader.

This image allowed him to emphasize that the Messiah does not conquer by the sword, but by meekness, sacrifice and mercy.
