In a statement, this Saturday, the National and International Council for Popular Communication (CONAICOP) supported the complaint made by the Permanent Mission of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the United Nations (UN), regarding the escalation of hostile actions and threats of intervention by the Government of the United States (USA).
“These actions include the deployment of warships in the Caribbean,” says the text, where the organization warns of the risk that these actions pose to regional peace.
Faced with this scenario, CONAICOP urged “preserving peace, security and stability in the region” and they demand “the immediate cessation of military deployment in the Caribbean”.
The document also raises concerns about the use of nuclear weapons and in this regard it was reaffirmed that “the Venezuelan Government requires verified guarantees from Washington that nuclear weapons will not be deployed in the region.”
CONAICOP called on multilateral organizations and UN member states to activate legal and diplomatic mechanisms. Through the statement, they call on the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean to “convene urgent consultations to address these interventionist actions.”
Finally, they ask to “respect the Treaty of Tlatelolco, which establishes Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone free of nuclear weapons”.
