The Portuguese cyclist César Martingil, from the Tavfer Ovos Matinados cast, won the first stage of the Vuelta a Venezuela in its 62nd edition on the circuit.
Martingil won the gold one on a 128-kilometer route held between the towns of San Cristóbal and Táriba in Táchira.
The Portuguese rider crossed the finish line with a total time of 3 hours 14 minutes and 56 seconds, after completing nine laps of the circuit.
Martingil, accompanied on the podium by the Venezuelan Leangel Linarez, the Portuguese's teammate, crossed the finish line in second place, followed by the Colombian Nicolás Gómez (Shimano), both with the same time as the winner.
However, Martingil placed first in the overall standings four seconds ahead of his two pursuers, thanks to bonuses in the competition.
In the battle of the sprinters, Colombian Cristian Vélez (Shimano) took over the sprinter jersey with five points, backed by Venezuelan Germán Rincón and Luis Pinto from New Granada with four units. The best climber was Carlos Galvis who won the only point of the day, according to Prensa Vuelta a Venezuela.
The competition was attended by more than 100 cyclists, and the opening was attended by the Minister of Popular Power for Sports, Franklin Cardillo and the Governor of the state of Táchira, Freddy Bernal.
“We officially kicked off this great national cycling festival from the Metropolitan Circuit between San Cristóbal and Táriba, with the company of great authorities,” said Minister Carrillo
Cardillo also thanked the President of the Republic Nicolás Maduro for his strong support for the country's sports development and the promotion of disciplines, such as cycling, which is an emblem of dedication, passion and national pride.
