Power blackout in France interrupted the development of the Cannes Film Festival

Much of the French department of the Alpes-Maritimes, in the south-east of the country, was left without electricity this Saturday after a pole fell on a power line. In addition to leaving 160,000 homes without electricity, according to estimates by the power grid operator RTE.

According to reports from the Russian agency RT, the blackout left the Cannes Film Festival in the dark.

The city was left without electricity just before the start of the award ceremony and the outage affected the screening rooms. Thanks to a generator, it was possible to resume the screenings, while the organizers assure that the closing of the festival will not be affected.

Electricity is expected to be restored in Cannes around noon local time. Meanwhile, the Municipal Police are responsible for regulating traffic on the roads while the traffic lights are not working.

“The RTE and Enedis teams are working to restore the supply as soon as possible. RTE apologizes for the inconvenience caused,” announced the French Electricity Transportation Network in a statement on X, after pointing out that problems have persisted since 10 in the morning.
