The president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, called this Wednesday for “the absolute independence of Puerto Rico” and urged the transformation of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) that includes this nation free from colonialism.

During his participation in the XXIII Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America - Peoples' Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP), which is being held in Caracas, the Venezuelan head of state stated that the independence of Puerto Rico is a pending account of the Liberators of America, “of Bolivar, of San Martín, of Sucre, of Morazán, of José Martí”.

“No to colonialism in Puerto Rico, no to vassalage, no to slavery, these are dreams that are coming true,” said the Dignitary from the Miraflores Palace .

In this regard, he called for strengthening CELAC, “as a great short and medium-term objective, to consider the dream of the Liberators, that we may have the strength, capacity, will, political independence, to move from a powerful Community of Latin American and Caribbean States to a confederation of peoples, States, governments of Latin America and the Caribbean, a new CELAC wherever it is Puerto Rico as well, as a new free, sovereign, independent State.”
