President Maduro: Binational agreement for a zone of peace with Colombia goes and will be developed for the good of the peoples

“I can say to the happiness of the People of Colombia and the People of Venezuela that the binational plan signed with the Government of Colombia, which is the binational agreement for a zone of peace, goes and will be developed for the good of both Peoples.”

This was emphasized by the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, this Thursday, during an interview with the television station TELESUR, as part of his visit to commemorate 20 years of this medium created by Supreme Commander Hugo Chávez.

The national president dismissed the campaign promoted by the Colombian right and its media to lie about the scope of this agreement for the development of a binational commercial zone on the border.

“The binational zone of peace, commercial, economic integration, investment, social and cultural development stems from the experience of many years. Don Álvaro Uribe Vélez Álvaro Uribe must remember (...) the meetings, more than 10 that I participated with Commander Chávez at the time that Uribe was president, I saw him, I experienced him, and what was being talked about there? Commercial integration, increased investment, health care for the binational population, cultural integration, educational integration, transportation, and so on,” he recalled.

He also pointed out that “with (Juan Manuel) Santos, progress has also been made, so we are taking up the positive experiences of the Uribe government, the Santos government and we have decided to build a binational zone where there is peace, where there is commercial and economic integration, investments, where there are investments to replace the cultivation of coca leaves, and using the experience we have binationally to end drug trafficking gangs that do so much damage, so much death at the border.”

He denounced that those who oppose this agreement for the benefit of both peoples “are those who bet on war, they are the people who want to see us face against the sons of (Simon) Bolívar, they are the ones who bet on confrontation so that one day, which must never come, we will be devastated by Colombia and Venezuela.”

“Their plans are going to be tainted and defeated and here peace will be imposed because the people of Colombia, but especially the people on the border, want peace and we want peace because we are brother peoples. Today Bolívar is turning 242 years old, he is Father Bolivar, the Father of the great nation that was called Colombia, but he is the Father of you Colombians and of us Venezuelans, and he is the father of unity for peace,” he said.
